FILM AND TELEVISION

500 Days of Summer

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom Hansen

The protagonist of the film, Tom Hansen, celebrates having spent the night with the object of his infatuation, Summer Finn. The clip shows how emotion, specifically giddiness, can alter perceptions of reality (though obviously artistic licence is taken). On a larger scale, the altered perceptions due to emotion are the downfall of the main relationship of the film, as by being overcome with giddiness and idealizing Summer, Tom is hindering his pursuit of both the girl and the knowledge of how to maintain a relationship.

Tony Hale as Buster Bluth

This clip shows how the simple joys of life, such as juice, can fill one with such giddiness, nearly approaching hysteria. However, like the above clip, Buster's tendency towards giddiness actually hinders his pursuit of knowledge. He is a very childlike character, and it is this quality which results in both his ability to be so gleeful over something so simple but also his inability to determine if the blue in a map represents the land.

Tom Kenny as Spongebob Squarepants

Like Buster, Spongebob has a childlike glee that allows him to feel this giddiness that doesn't exactly promote knowledge. However, the song encourages enjoying the little things and changing one's perception on various things. By using this giddy energy to go out and do things, Spongebob is changing his perception on the world through a different emotional lens, adding a new facet to his knowing.
